PKUAAGNY Hosts Entrepreneurship Forum

On April 9, 2009, Peking University Alumni Association of Greater New York (PKUAAGNY), partnering with the Hong Kong association of New York, hosted the first event of its new entrepreneurship program. Over 50 people participated.

This seminar featured three speakers. Stephen Wong, regional director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), presented the amazing trade opportunities via the free port of Hong Kong and the fast development across China. He also highlighted the many resources provided by the HKTDC to facilitate trading with companies in Hong Kong.

The second speaker, Jonathan Northrup, a pharmaceutical veteran who founded his own consulting practice after a long and successful career at Eli Lilly, talked about the challenging transition from a corporate executive to an entrepreneur, the pressures pharmaceutical companies are facing, and hence the opportunities to entrepreneurs in US and China. Jon also discussed that, to be an entrepreneur, one needs to be absurdly optimistic, making all the out of pocket personal expenses with the confidence of one day getting the return.

The third speaker, James Tu, was an equity analyst for ten years before starting his healthy vegetarian food business. James highlighted that, in order to be a successful entrepreneur, one needs to know one's trade really well and be better than anybody else at what one does. In this aspect, it is no different from working for a corporation. James Tu's company, Zen Palate, provided the delicious and very healthy food for the reception after the seminar.

This event was made possible by Daniel Lou, president of PKUAAGNY, Sam Zhang, a PKUAAGNY vice president and long time friend of Jon, and James Zhihua Wang, PKUAAGNY entrepreneurship program director. Stayed tuned for future events on entrepreneurship.
