北京大学大纽约地区校友会首次成功举办未名论坛

    北京大学大纽约地区校友会11月9日晚于纽约宾西法尼亚大学俱乐部举行盛大晚宴招待会,欢迎北京大学校务委员会主席、中共北大党委书记闵维方博士、许智宏前校长、北京大学副校长海闻博士率领的代表团访问纽约,并成功举办“未名论坛”。

    闵维方书记担任了纽约“未名论坛”的第一位主讲人。怀着对北大的深厚感情和对未来的无限憧憬,闵书记向与会的校友和来宾们介绍了北京大学目前的概貌、过去十年来取得的重大发展和光辉的前景。他表示,2010年是中国高等教育重要的一年,今年召开的全国教育工作会议是党中央、国务院在新世纪召开的第一次全国教育工作会议,《国家中长期教育改革和发展规划纲要》正式颁布实施。在当前的经济背景下,党中央第十七届五中全会在今后五年的经济发展中,把教育的重要性提高到前所未有的高度,为北大的发展提供了又一重要的契机。他希望纽约的校友和各界朋友们来共同关心和支持北大的发展,并带来了北大五万师生对纽约校友们的问候。

    作为论坛的第二位主将人,北京大学副校长海闻博士海校长就人民币汇率这一国际焦点介绍了了美国要求人民币升值的理由、人民币不能快速升值的原因以及中国政府针对这一问题的应对之道。海闻副校长还与大家分享了他在1982年留学美国、1995年回国的经历。同时兼任北京大学深圳研究生院院长,北京大学汇丰商学院院长的海闻博士还向大学介绍了深圳研究生院的概况。

    2010年世界华人金融影响力大奖第一名获得者、现任摩根大通证券亚洲有限公司董事总经理、中国区投资银行副主席的龚方雄校友则分析了目前西方发达国家普遍地陷入低利率、低成长、高债务和高失业率和中国等新兴发展国家则出现高成长、高利率以及债务相对较少和失业率相对较低这一国际发展不平衡的问题,并预计美国靠美元贬值和低利率来拉动经济的策略操作空间和效果都有限,今后两三年经济景气将仍然是欲振乏力。北大哲学系校友、银华基金管理有限公司的总经理王立新则展望了国内基金产业的前景与机会。

    拉查德资产管理公司董事总经理、纽约校友会主席邓琨则主持了金融界校友和特邀嘉宾的专题讨论会,由华尔街高端人才顾问/人力资源专家裔锦声博士、EMI基金管理公司董事总经理谢鹏飞、摩根斯坦利董事总经理汤漪、高盛集团董事总经理叶曦等校友及TCW董事总经理Steven Suo、奥本海默基金董事总经理李山泉等分别介绍了他们在纽约华尔街成功发展的经历、体会以及北大人在华尔街的职场生涯发表了独到而深入的见解。

    这是纽约校友会首次举办“未名论坛”。北京大学大纽约地区校友会会长楼新跃代表到场的各位校友、纽约校友会以及校友会董事会对远道而来的北京大学领导以及代表团各位成员及与会的一百多位校友和来宾表示欢迎,向各界校友和关爱北大的朋友们对北京大学大纽约地区校友会和“未名论坛”的支持致以感谢。邓琨和裔锦生博士则分别担任闵维芳书记和海闻校长的主题演讲的引言人。

    许智宏前校长代表北大代表团和到会的北大美国教育基金会施旭东总裁等职员致祝酒词,他特别对大家在他北京大学担任校长九年间给予的各方面的支持表示感谢,期望大家今后继续关心北大。

    参加这次论坛的还有中国驻纽约总领馆教育参赞岑建君、领事李婷婷、文化参赞孔晶、中国常驻联合国代表团科技参赞赵新力、纽约华美协进社主席甘维珍等纽约各界多位嘉宾。

Peking University Alumni Association of Greater New York Successfully Hosted the First Weiming Forum in New York

Peking University Alumni Association of Greater New York (PKUAAGNY) hosted a welcoming reception and banquet dinner at the Penn Club in the evening of November 9 in honor of the PKU delegation led by Dr. Weifang Min, Chairman of the University Council, and Dr. Wen Hai, Vice President of Peking University. Dr. Min and Dr. Hai were also two keynote speakers of the Weiming Forum, hosted by the association.

Dr. Weifang Min started his speech with best regards from 50,000 faculty and students at the PKU, wishing everyone a wonderful evening. Dr. Weifang Min pointed out that 2010 is an important year for higher education in China. The first National Education Working Conference took place earlier this year. It also saw the promulgation and enforcement National Medium and Long-term Educational Reform and Development Planning Programme. Considering the current economic background, the Communist Party of China (CPC) emphasized the importance of education in next 5 years’ economic development in the Fifth Plenum of the 17th Central Committee of the CPC. Dr. Min also shared an overview of Peking University, its brilliant past decade and a promising future.

During his keynote speech, Vice President of Peking University, Dr. Wen Hai answered three questions related to the hot RMB issue. These questions are “Why U.S. wants appreciation of RMB”, “Why the value of RMB should not rise too fast” and “How can Chinese government solve this issue”. He also shared his experience of starting studying in United States in 1982 and returning China in 1995. As Dean of Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University, Dean of PKU HSBC School of Business, Dr. Hai introduced Shenzhen Graduate School briefly.

Dr. Frank FX Gong, a Managing Director of JP Morgan Securities (Asia Pacific), a PKU alum, also shared his thoughts on the worldwide economy and economic situation in China and its outlook. Another PKU alum, CEO of Yinhua Fund Management of China shared his insights on the prospects and opportunities in China ‘s fund industry.

Kun Deng, Managing Director of Lazard Asset Management moderated a panel including distinguished PKU Alumni, Pengfei Xie, Managing Director of EIM USA, Yi Tang, Managing Director of Morgan Stanley, Xi Ye, Managing Director of Goldman Sachs, and Jeannie Yi, Chairman of CG Group as well as guest speakers, Shanquan Li, Managing Director of Oppenheimer Funds, Steven Suo, Managing Director of TCW. They shared their experiences on careers in Wall Street and their personal views on the current economic and financial markets.

The event was hosted by Daniel Lou, President of Peking University Alumni Association of Greater New York. President Lou welcomed the delegation from Peking University and all participating alumni and distinguished guests and thank them for their support to the growth of the association as well as to the event.

Former President, Dr. Zhihong Xu gave thanks to participants for supporting during his 9 years as the president. Dr. Xu wished that everyone to continue caring for Peking University.

In presence of the event also include distinguished guests from the Consulate General of PRC in New York, Education Counselor Jianjun Cen, Culture Consul Rose Kong and Science and Technology Counselor Xinli Zhao of the Permanent Mission to the United Nations of PRC as well as Ginny Kamski, Chairman of China Institute of America.
